Atlantic County splits into two kinds of homes. On the barrier islands you find tall, closely packed shore houses in Atlantic City, Ventnor City, Margate City and Brigantine. Inland in Hammonton, Mays Landing, Galloway and Egg Harbor, you find more ranches and split-levels. The stairs in those two kinds of homes call for very different lifts.
Across the county's 43 towns, 19.7% of residents are 65 or older, and 70.5% of households own their homes. For many families the question is not whether Mom or Dad can keep using the stairs, but which lift fits the staircase they already have and who can help pay for it. This page walks through both.
Many homes in Atlantic City, Ventnor City and Margate City were built on small lots with steep, tight interior stairs to squeeze more living space out of a narrow footprint. Multi-story shore housing with gambrel roofs is common here, along with early 20th century Colonial Revival, Italianate, Classical Revival and English Tudor homes.
Tight stairs with turns or landings usually need a curved lift, with a rail built to follow that exact staircase. A straight lift only works when the run goes top to bottom without a bend. We measure every step before recommending either one.
Multi-level porches are another common feature on the islands. If the porch steps are the real barrier, an outdoor stair lift, or a platform lift for someone who uses a wheelchair, may matter more than anything inside the house.
The barrier islands sit between the ocean and the tidal marshes, bays and Intracoastal Waterway, with hot, humid summers and constant salt air. That combination is hard on metal. In shore towns we specify marine-grade, corrosion-resistant hardware and rail components, especially for any lift that sits on a porch or outside steps.
The county is also exposed to nor'easters and hurricanes. Hurricane Sandy caused an estimated $300 million in county damage in 2012. If a home took on water then, it is worth checking the condition of the stairs and the framing before a rail goes in.
Inland towns such as Hammonton, Mays Landing, Galloway and Egg Harbor sit on flatter, drier ground near the Pine Barrens, so corrosion is less of a worry. The housing leans toward mid-century ranches and split-levels.
A split-level often has short flights of stairs between floors. A short straight run is usually the simplest and least involved install there, though a home with more than one short flight may need a lift on each one. Basement stairs in a ranch are often a straight run as well.
Townhouses and duplexes across the county often have a single straight staircase against a wall, which suits a straight lift. In walk-up apartments and condos, check with the building or association before planning any install in a shared stairwell.
Atlantic County's median property value was $295,000 in 2024, and 2025 listings put the median sale price higher, around $355,850 to $395,000. A paid-off house that is gaining value is a big reason many owners would rather adapt the stairs than sell.
Moving has its own costs. Local estimates for a typical 2-bedroom move within the county run about $625 to $1,250, before the price of a new home. Comparing that against a lift on the stairs you already have is a reasonable first step.
Be clear-eyed here: none of the county programs we know of name stair lifts on their published lists of covered work. They are still worth a call, because staff can tell you whether a lift could be considered on a case-by-case basis, and they may cover other repairs that free up your budget.

Often, yes. Many barrier-island homes have steep, tight stairs built for small lots, and a curved lift with a custom rail is usually the answer when the stairs turn. We measure first so you know what fits before you commit.
Salt air and humidity on the barrier islands can corrode standard metal parts. That is why we use marine-grade, corrosion-resistant hardware and rail components in shore towns, especially for outdoor lifts.
Its published scope names only handrail installation and minor home repairs, and it covers labor, not the item installed. It is open to residents age 60 or older, so call (888) 426-9243 to confirm the current scope.

Not usually. Split-levels tend to have short straight flights, which suit straight lifts. If you need to reach more than one level, you may need a lift on each flight.
