From Kingman and Golden Valley to Lake Havasu City, Bullhead City and Fort Mohave, most homes in Mohave County sit on one level. Single-story ranch houses and manufactured homes make up a large share of the 27 towns we serve, so the stairs that cause trouble are often the ones outside the front door, not inside.
That changes along the Colorado River. In Lake Havasu City and Bullhead City, two-story homes built for the water view are more common, and a staircase inside can become the hardest part of the day. This page covers which kind of lift fits which kind of Mohave County home, and where to look for help paying for it.
Much of the county's housing is single-family homes and manufactured homes, including many affordable manufactured homes from the 1960s next to newer subdivisions. You will also find townhouses, low-rise buildings and walk-up apartments. Each one sets up a different problem.
For a two-story house in Lake Havasu City or Bullhead City, the question is the shape of the staircase. A straight run takes a straight stair lift, which is the simpler install. Stairs that turn or have a landing in the middle need a curved lift built to that staircase.
In a ranch or manufactured home, the barrier is usually the entry steps. That is where an outdoor stair lift or a platform lift comes in, especially for someone using a wheelchair or walker who cannot transfer to a seat.
Mohave County covers over 13,000 square miles, from Sonoran Desert plains to the Colorado River corridor. Summers bring high heat and intense UV exposure, and both are hard on anything left out in the open.
For that reason we lean toward covered or weatherproofed outdoor stair lifts and platform lifts rather than unprotected installs. A lift on a sunny porch in Bullhead City or a front step in Golden Valley should have that protection planned from the start, not added later.
Roughly 73.1 percent of households own their home, which matters because owners can usually make permanent changes like a lift without a landlord's sign-off.
Veterans have local resources close by. VA Northern Arizona Health Care runs community clinics in Kingman and Lake Havasu City, and a state Veteran Benefits Counselor works out of Kingman.
The 2024 median property value in the county was about $281,000, well below the national average. For many retirees on a fixed income, the cost of the equipment is a real concern, so it is worth checking every program before paying out of pocket.
Arizona's ALTCS program can cover home modifications, including stair lifts, for members who qualify. Veterans with severe service-connected disabilities may qualify for SAH or SHA grants. The VA HISA grant does not cover stair glides or porch lifts, so do not count on it for this.
