Stair lifts for homes in Mathews County, Virginia

Mathews County sits on a low-lying peninsula on Virginia's Middle Peninsula, with Mobjack Bay and the Chesapeake Bay on one side and the Piankatank River on the other. Around the towns of Mathews and Gwynn you find old courthouse-era buildings, rural farmhouses and waterfront homes along more than 200 miles of tidal shoreline.

Many of those houses were built long before anyone wrote an accessibility code. If a parent is finding the stairs harder, or you want to stay in your own home longer, this page covers what kind of stair lift tends to fit Mathews County homes and which programs are worth calling about the cost.

Older homes around Mathews Court House

The town center is preserved as the Mathews Downtown Historic District, 177 acres added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2017. Growth there picked up after the county seat, then called Westville and now Mathews Court House, was set up in 1791. Federal, Georgian and Classical Revival styles show up throughout.

Homes from that era often have narrow, steep staircases, landings that turn, and walls and treads that are not perfectly square. A straight stair lift works when the run goes top to bottom without a turn. When the stairs wrap around a landing, a curved rail built to the exact shape of the staircase is usually the answer.

A stair lift rail mounts to the stair treads, not the wall, so original plaster and woodwork are generally left alone. We measure every step before recommending anything, because old staircases rarely match a standard layout.

Ranch-style and split-level homes

Not every home here is historic. Single-family detached houses, ranch-style homes and split-level homes are common across the county too.

A split-level usually has short flights between levels, which often suits a straight lift on each flight. Ranch-style homes may keep the main living space on one floor, but steps to a basement or up to the front door can still be the problem. In those cases a short straight lift or an outdoor unit may be all that is needed.

Waterfront lots and outdoor steps

Mathews County covers about 86 square miles yet has an unusually long shoreline for its size. Plenty of homes face the water, and some sit up on raised foundations with exterior stairs to the main door.

For those steps, an outdoor stair lift built to handle weather is one choice. Where someone uses a wheelchair and cannot transfer to a seat, a platform lift may be the better fit. On waterfront lots, any pier or foundation work needed for a lift can add to the project cost, so it is worth looking at the site in person before settling on a plan.

Why so many families here are asking

Mathews County has an older population than most of Virginia. Independent sources put the share of residents age 65 or older at roughly one-third, about 33%, compared with roughly 18% statewide. Homeownership is high, at about 84%.

That means many people are aging in homes they own, in a rural county with limited service infrastructure. A stair lift can let someone keep using the whole house instead of moving a bedroom downstairs or leaving home.

Paying for a stair lift in Mathews County

None of the programs below name stair lifts in their published rules, and the VA's HISA grant specifically excludes stair glides. That does not mean help is out of reach. Several programs cover accessibility modifications in general, and the right move is to call and ask how a stair lift request would be handled.

Start with Bay Aging, the area agency on aging for this region, at (804) 758-2386. Veterans can reach the Virginia Department of Veterans Services Hampton office at (757) 825-7893. Statewide, it is also worth asking about the Virginia Livable Home Tax Credit (LHTC) and the Assistive Technology Loan Fund Authority (ATLFA).

Questions from Mathews County

Can a stair lift go in a historic house near Mathews Court House?

Usually, yes. The rail attaches to the stair treads rather than the walls, and a curved rail can be built to follow turns and landings common in older homes. We measure the staircase first to confirm the fit.

Does the VA pay for stair lifts?

The HISA grant does not; the VA lists stair glides as excluded. The SAH and SHA grants do not name stair lifts either way, so call (800) 827-1000 to ask. The Virginia Department of Veterans Services Hampton office at (757) 825-7893 can also help.

Will Medicaid cover a stair lift in Virginia?

The CCC Plus waiver's Environmental Modifications service covers up to $5,000 per calendar year, but its rules do not name stair lifts. Ask your MCO care coordinator whether a stair lift request would be approved.

Is there help for someone 60 or older who is not on Medicaid?

Bay Aging serves adults 60+ in Mathews County. Call (804) 758-2386 and ask about accessibility modifications or stair lift referrals. USDA Section 504 grants are also open to very-low-income homeowners age 62+.

Our house is on the water with steps up to the door. What are the options?

An outdoor stair lift or a platform lift may work, depending on whether the person can transfer to a seat. Waterfront lots sometimes need pier or foundation work, which can raise the cost, so an on-site look comes first.
