Stair lifts for homes in Pontotoc County, Oklahoma

Ada sits at 1,011 feet in what Wikipedia calls the rolling hills of southeastern Oklahoma, and the rest of Pontotoc County follows that same up-and-down ground. From Latta and Byng to Roff, Stonewall, Allen and Fitzhugh, homes here often have porch steps, sloped yards and an indoor staircase or two.

This page walks through how the county's homes and terrain affect stair lift choices, then lists the programs that may help with cost. The goal is to let you look at your own stairs with a clear idea of what fits before anyone comes out to measure.

Older homes in Ada and newer ones around it

Ada's historic core includes places on the National Register of Historic Places, such as the Pontotoc County Courthouse and the Wintersmith Park Historic District. The city is also an Oklahoma Main Street City and a Tree City USA member. Around that older center you'll find newer residential construction.

Older houses tend to have narrow staircases, tight landings and steps that are not perfectly even. A straight stair lift mounts to the treads, not the wall, so it usually works on an older staircase as long as the run is straight. If the stairs turn at a landing, a curved rail built to that staircase is the usual answer.

Split-levels, townhouses and walk-ups

Homes in the county include single-family homes, townhouses, walk-up apartments, low-rise buildings and split-level homes. Each one sets up the stair question a little differently.

Split-level homes have short flights between floors, sometimes more than one. That can mean a short straight lift for the flight used most, or two lifts if both matter for daily living. Townhouses often have one long straight flight, which is the simplest and most common install.

In a walk-up apartment or a low-rise building, the stairs may be shared or belong to the owner of the building. Talk with the landlord or building manager before planning anything, since the lift attaches to the stairs.

Hills, porches and outdoor steps

Pontotoc County covers 725 square miles of rolling ground in south-central Oklahoma, with the Canadian River along its northern edge. On hilly lots, the hardest steps are often outside: a run of porch stairs or steps down a slope to the driveway.

Outdoor stair lifts are built to handle weather and can follow a straight run of exterior steps. Where a wheelchair user needs to get in and out, a vertical platform lift at the porch may make more sense than a seat lift. We look at both the inside and outside stairs during a visit so you are not solving only half the problem.

Who in the county is most likely to need one

Those figures matter because several of the funding options below are tied to age or military service.

Around 54.0 percent of residents own their homes. Owning matters for some programs, like the USDA repair loans and the Chickasaw Nation housing grants, which are for homeowners living in the home.

Paying for a stair lift here

No program on our list names stair lifts directly as a covered item, so it pays to ask each one plainly before you count on it. Several do fund home modifications or accessibility work in general, and a few offer loans you control.

For veterans, the VA HISA grant specifically excludes stair glides, but the larger VA adapted housing grants cover broad structural changes for veterans with severe service-connected disabilities. For Chickasaw citizens, the Chickasaw Nation runs housing and elder programs out of Ada, where the tribe has had its headquarters since 1974.

Statewide, Oklahoma also offers Living Choice (Money Follows the Person) and the ADvantage Waiver. The SODA Area Agency on Aging office in Ardmore at 1405 N. Commerce, (580) 226-2250, is a good first call to sort out which ones you may qualify for. Veterans can reach the Muskogee Office at 125 S. Main Room 104, (918) 781-7766.

Questions from Pontotoc County

Will the VA pay for a stair lift in my Pontotoc County home?

Not through HISA, which explicitly excludes stair glides and porch lifts. The SAH and SHA grants cover broader adaptations for veterans with severe service-connected disabilities, but they do not list stair lifts by name, so ask the VA at (800) 827-1000 about your case.

Is there help for someone under 60?

Most aging programs here start at 60, and USDA grants start at 62. The OkAT home modification loan is open to Oklahomans with a disability regardless of age, and the ADvantage Waiver covers disabled adults as determined by the Social Security Administration.

We're Chickasaw citizens in Ada. What can we apply for?

The Chickasaw Nation Housing Handicapped Accessibility Grant is for income-eligible citizens who own their home. Elders 60 and older can also look at the Elders Program Home Maintenance service at (405) 331-2420, which installs ramps and grab bars.

Our house is a split-level. Does a stair lift still work?

Usually, yes. Each short flight is its own staircase, so you may need a lift on the flight used most, or one on each if both matter for daily life.

I rent a walk-up apartment. Can I get a stair lift?

Talk with your landlord first, since the lift attaches to the stairs and shared stairs may belong to the building. Programs like USDA repair loans and the Chickasaw housing grants are for homeowners, so renters have fewer funding options.

Who should I call first for senior services in the county?

Start with the SODA Area Agency on Aging, which serves Pontotoc County. Its Ardmore office is at 1405 N. Commerce, (580) 226-2250, and its program line is (580) 920-1388.
