Iredell County has two very different halves. Around Mooresville and Lake Norman, farmland has given way to shopping centers, office parks and newer multi-story housing. The northern third is highly rural, with no large towns and plenty of older farmhouses and ranch homes sitting on larger lots.
That split shapes what a stair lift job looks like here. A two-story house in a newer Mooresville development usually needs an interior lift on the main staircase. A farmhouse north of Statesville or out toward Harmony is more likely to need help with the entry steps than with an upstairs climb.
Newer two-story suburban houses in the southern part of the county are the most common fit for an interior stair lift. If the staircase runs in one line from bottom to top, a straight rail is the simpler option. Stairs that turn at a landing or wrap around need a curved rail built to that staircase.
Townhouses and duplexes often have narrow stairs, so we measure width and the space at the top and bottom before recommending a model. Split-level homes are a different case: several short flights may each need their own look, and sometimes only one flight is the real problem.
In the rural north, many homes are single-story but sit up on multi-level entry steps. For those, an outdoor lift, a platform lift or a ramp may matter more than anything inside. Long gravel or dirt driveways can also complicate delivery and installation, so tell us about access when you call.
Most of the county is gently rolling countryside broken by low hills and small river valleys. The northwestern corner rises into the Brushy Mountains, where Fox Mountain reaches 1,760 feet, the county's highest point.
Homes on sloping ground often have more steps at the door than homes on flat lots. Around Lake Norman, which extends into the southwestern part of the county, real estate development has shaped many newer homes. In either setting, an outdoor or entry solution deserves a look alongside the indoor staircase.
Iredell County has about 97,728 residents, and 14.4% are 65 or older. About 62.0% of residents own their homes, which matters because most installations and many repair programs are aimed at owners.
The Iredell County Veteran Services Office at 200 S Center Street in Statesville can help sort out which VA benefits apply; call (704) 878-3135.
The clearest public route is NC Medicaid's CAP/DA waiver, which lists equipment, modification and technology as a service. Stair lifts are not named on the program pages, so the request needs to be written into the plan of care through the assigned case manager.
VA help is more limited than many families expect. The HISA grant specifically excludes stair glides and porch lifts, and the SAH and SHA grants do not list stair lifts. Local repair programs, such as the Urgent Repair Program and Rebuilding Together of Greater Charlotte, fund safety work but also do not name stair lifts, so ask directly.
For general aging services, contact Region F - Centralina Regional Council AAA at (704) 348-2712. North Carolina also offers the Elderly or Disabled Property Tax Homestead Exclusion (G.S. 105-277.1), which can ease property tax costs for qualifying owners.
A Medicaid home and community waiver for adults 18 and older who meet nursing facility level of care and live in their own or a family member's home; its equipment, modification and technology service can cover a stair lift if it is written into the plan of care. The same CAP/DA waiver, confirmed on a second source, covers minor home modifications for safety and accessibility, with income limits of about $1,330 a month and assets of about $2,000 for a single person. Call (833) 470-0597.

It can through the CAP/DA waiver, which covers equipment, modification and technology. The person must meet nursing facility level of care and Medicaid financial rules, and the stair lift should be written into the plan of care by the CAP/DA case manager. Start with Acentra Health at (833) 522-5429.
No. The VA specifically excludes stair glides and porch lifts from HISA. The grant can still help with other structural access work, and the Iredell County Veteran Services Office at (704) 878-3135 can talk through SAH and SHA eligibility.
Often the issue is the entry steps rather than an inside staircase. An outdoor lift, a platform lift or a ramp may be the better fit, and we will want to know about your driveway before installation day.
The USDA Section 504 program offers grants up to $10,000 to very-low-income homeowners 62 or older in eligible rural areas, plus loans up to $40,000 at 1%. Stair lifts are not named on the program page, so confirm the use when you apply.
