Stair lifts in Otsego County, New York

From the 19th-century houses of Cooperstown and Cherry Valley to farmhouses on back roads outside Worcester, Laurens and Edmeston, a lot of Otsego County homes were built around a steep interior staircase. Many of those homes have been owned by the same family for decades, and the bedrooms and only full bath are often upstairs.

We install stair lifts across all 34 towns in the county, including Oneonta, Milford, Richfield Springs, Unadilla and Schenevus. This page explains which kind of lift tends to fit local homes, what the hilly, rural setting means for an install, and which local and state programs are worth a phone call when it comes to paying.

Older village homes and farmhouses

Otsego County's housing is concentrated in small historic village centers like Cooperstown, Oneonta, Milford, Richfield Springs and Cherry Valley, where many 19th-century buildings are still in use. Out in the countryside, multi-story farmhouses with interior staircases are common.

Older staircases are often narrow, and some turn at a landing or have winders at the top. A straight stair runs on a single rail and is usually the simplest install. A stair that turns needs a curved rail built to fit that staircase, so we measure on site before quoting anything.

Split-level homes bring a different question: several short flights instead of one long one. Sometimes the answer is a lift on the flight used every day, and sometimes it is more than one lift. Townhouses, walk-up apartments and low-rise buildings can also take a stair lift, though shared stairways may need the owner's or building's permission.

Hills, porches and rural driveways

The county covers roughly 1,015 square miles of hilly, forested Appalachian foothills, and many older residents live well outside the villages. For a lot of farmhouses, the hardest steps are not inside. They are the porch steps or the slope between the driveway and the door.

Outdoor stair lifts are built for weather and can handle exterior steps to a porch or deck. Where a wheelchair is involved, a vertical platform lift or a ramp may be the better choice. We look at the whole route from the car to the bedroom, not just the main staircase.

Who in the county is aging in place

About 21.7% of Otsego County residents are 65 or older, and 72.7% of households own their home. That combination means many people are staying in houses they have lived in for years, rather than moving to newer housing designed with no steps.

For an adult child helping a parent, the practical question is usually whether the parent can keep using the upstairs safely. A stair lift keeps the existing layout, so nobody has to turn a dining room into a bedroom.

Questions from Otsego County

Can a stair lift go on the narrow staircase in an old farmhouse?

Often it can. Narrow or turning stairs are common in 19th-century homes and farmhouses here, and a turning stair needs a curved rail made for that staircase. We measure in person to see what fits.

Is there help paying for a stair lift in Otsego County?

No listed program names stair lifts directly, but ORHA at (607) 286-7244 runs accessibility programs that include ramps or lifts for households at or below 80% of Area Median Income. The Office for the Aging at (607) 547-4232 can also suggest options.

Will the VA pay for a stair lift?

The VA HISA grant excludes stair glides, so it will not. The SAH and SHA grants do not itemize stair lifts either way. Call the Veterans' Service Agency at (607) 547-4245 to talk through your situation.

Is there help for someone under 60?

EISEP is for people 60 and older, but the Medicaid waivers through the Catskill Center for Independence start at age 18. Access to Home is based on disability and income rather than age.

We live far from Cooperstown. Who do we call first?

The statewide NY Connects line at 1-800-342-9871 helps rural residents find home modification funding without traveling. You can also reach the Otsego County Office for the Aging by phone at (607) 547-4232.

What about the steps up to our porch?

Outdoor stair lifts are made for exterior steps to a porch or deck. If someone uses a wheelchair, a platform lift or ramp may work better, and we can look at both.
