Most of Nye County lives in Pahrump, about 86% of residents, in a town that grew up as a bedroom community for Las Vegas. Drive 160 miles north to Tonopah and you are in a county seat built during the early-1900s silver rush. Between them sit Beatty, Amargosa Valley and a great deal of open desert.
That spread shapes how we plan a stair lift here. A newer split-level in Pahrump and an older house in Tonopah can need very different equipment, and both may need steps outside handled too. This page walks through what fits the homes in this county and which programs may help with the cost.
Nye County has 25,191 housing units, and almost all of them are concentrated in Pahrump. The rest of the county is older mining-boom building stock, thinly spread across towns like Tonopah, Beatty, Round Mountain and Gabbs. The county still holds some 15 ghost towns, including Rhyolite and Belmont.
For a stair lift, that means we look at each house on its own terms. A Pahrump single-family home built for commuters is usually straightforward to measure. An older Tonopah house may have narrow or steep stairs, uneven treads or tight turns, which we check in person before recommending a rail.
A straight stair lift fits a single run of stairs with no turns or landings. It is the simplest rail to build and install, and it suits many detached houses with one staircase between floors.
Split-level homes are different. They often have short flights with a landing or a turn, so the choice is between a curved rail that follows the stairs or separate straight lifts on each flight. We measure both options and explain the tradeoffs.
Manufactured homes usually have few or no indoor stairs, but the entry steps outside can be the real barrier. An outdoor stair lift built for weather exposure, or a platform lift for someone using a wheelchair, is often the better answer there. Low-rise buildings with shared stairs need the owner's or building manager's approval before anything is mounted.
The county skews older. The median age was 53.6 in the 2020 Census, and the share of residents 65 or older was nearly double the national average. Pahrump in particular works as a retirement community for people moving out from Las Vegas.
Among occupied homes, 74.2% are owner-occupied, so most modifications here are made by people who plan to stay in the house long term.
Nye County is the largest county in Nevada and the third-largest in the contiguous United States, at roughly 18,182 square miles of desert and mountain terrain. The federal government manages about 92% of that land, so towns are far apart with little in between.
If you live outside Pahrump, plan for scheduling that accounts for the drive. Clear photos of your stairs and measurements taken ahead of time help us arrive with the right questions answered.
No program on our list names stair lifts as a covered item, so expect to confirm coverage directly with each office before you count on it. The VA HISA grant specifically excludes stair glides, while VA SAH and SHA grants do not say either way.

We work across Nye County, but towns here are far apart, with Tonopah 160 miles from Pahrump. Sending photos and stair measurements ahead of time helps us plan the trip.
Often yes. Many manufactured homes have few indoor stairs, and the entry steps are the hard part. An outdoor stair lift or a platform lift for wheelchair users is usually the option we look at.
USDA Section 504 offers grants up to $10,000 for very-low-income homeowners 62 and older, along with low-interest loans, to fix health and safety hazards. Stair lifts are not named, so confirm with the local Rural Development office.
Not always. If the short flights are separated by landings, two straight lifts can sometimes replace one curved rail. We measure the stairs and compare both before you decide.
Nye County Senior Services at (775) 482-7300 can point you to state resources. Rural Nevada Aging Services at (775) 687-4210 handles the Frail Elderly waiver and other aging programs.
