Stair lifts for homes in Douglas County, Nevada

Douglas County runs from the Carson Valley floor, where Minden and Gardnerville sit around 4,700 feet, up into the Carson Range and the Lake Tahoe shore at Stateline, Zephyr Cove and Glenbrook. A ranch-style house in Gardnerville Ranchos and a hillside condo above the lake can need two very different stair lifts.

We install across all 20 towns in the county, from Johnson Lane and Indian Hills to Genoa, Topaz Ranch Estates and Topaz Lake. This page walks through how local homes and terrain shape the choice of lift, and which programs in Nevada may help with the cost.

Valley homes versus Tahoe homes

The flatter Carson Valley towns, like Minden and Gardnerville, have many single-family homes and detached houses. When the stairs in those homes run in one straight flight, a straight stair lift is usually the simplest and least costly fit.

Split-level homes are common in the valley too. A split-level often has short flights with a landing or a turn, and that can mean a curved rail or two separate straight lifts. We measure every flight before recommending one or the other.

Up at the lake, Stateline and Zephyr Cove have multi-level homes and condos built into sloped ground. Stairs there often turn, and a curved lift built to the staircase is a frequent answer.

Snow, slopes and outdoor stairs

Douglas County climbs to 9,593 feet at East Peak, and about 13.2% of Lake Tahoe's surface sits inside county lines. In the Tahoe basin communities, winter snow load, steep driveways and entry stairs on hillsides are part of daily life.

If the hardest climb is outside, from the driveway to the front door, an outdoor stair lift built for weather may matter more than an indoor one. For someone who uses a wheelchair, a platform lift can be the better match for a short rise at an entrance.

Townhouses and low-rise buildings bring their own questions, such as shared stairwells and who has to approve the installation. It helps to check with the owner or association before we schedule a visit.

Who in the county is weighing this

About 31.2% of Douglas County residents are 65 or older, so a lot of households here are thinking about stairs at the same time.

Owning the home matters because most repair and modification programs listed below require that the home be owner-occupied. Renters can still get a lift but will need the owner's permission.

Paying for a stair lift in Douglas County

Income here varies a lot from place to place. In Stateline, where many people work in tourism and hospitality, the median household income was $47,054 as of 2024, and fixed or seasonal incomes make out-of-pocket costs a real concern.

None of the programs below name stair lifts as a covered item in their published materials, and the VA HISA grant specifically excludes stair glides. Some cover home accessibility work in general terms, so it is worth asking each one directly how they would treat a stair lift request.

Questions from Douglas County

Will Nevada Medicaid pay for a stair lift?

Neither Medicaid waiver names stair lifts. The WIN waiver lists Environmental Accessibility Adaptations without spelling out what is included, and the Frail Elderly waiver does not list home modifications at all, so ask your case manager directly.

Does the VA HISA grant cover a stair lift?

No. The VA's HISA page explicitly excludes stair glides, along with portable ramps and porch lifts. Veteran's Services in Gardnerville at (775) 782-5500 can help you look at other VA benefits.

Is there help for someone under 60?

The WIN Medicaid waiver has no age limit for people with a documented physical disability who meet its care and financial rules. Rebuilding Together Northern Nevada also serves people with disabilities and families in need, not just seniors.

We live up at the lake in Zephyr Cove. Do we need an outdoor lift?

It depends on where the hard climb is. Many Tahoe basin homes have steep driveways and entry stairs that see heavy snow, so an outdoor lift may make sense alongside or instead of an indoor one. We look at both during the home visit.

Could a rural home in Douglas County qualify for USDA help?

Possibly. Eligibility for Section 504 is address-based, and unincorporated or rural parts of the county are the likeliest to qualify. Grants are for homeowners 62 and older with very low income who cannot repay a loan.

Who should I call first about aging services near Minden or Gardnerville?

Rural Nevada Aging Services at 3416 Goni Rd., Suite D-132 in Carson City handles this region, and its phone is (775) 687-4210. The Douglas County Community & Senior Center in Gardnerville is at (775) 782-5500.
