Stair lifts in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana

From the historic streets of Abbeville to Kaplan, Delcambre, Maurice, Erath, Gueydan and Perry, Vermilion Parish is full of established homes rather than new subdivisions. Many of them sit on raised foundations with a set of front entry steps, and those steps are often the first thing that gets hard to manage.

This page walks through what the parish's homes and low, water-heavy coastal land mean for choosing a stair lift. It also lists the programs that may help pay for one, with phone numbers where we have them.

Raised homes and front steps

A lot of homes in these Cajun-country river towns were built up off the ground, so even a single-story house can have a run of steps at the front door. For that kind of entry, an outdoor stair lift built for weather exposure is usually the first thing we look at.

If the steps are short and straight, a straight-rail outdoor unit is often the simplest fit. When a wheelchair has to come along, a platform lift may make more sense than a seat-style lift.

Ranch, split-level and older Abbeville houses

The parish housing stock leans toward single-family and detached houses, including ranch-style and split-level homes. A ranch-style house often needs help only at the entry, while a split-level home has short flights between levels inside that may each need their own rail.

Abbeville has its downtown, commercial and residential cores each listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the Abbeville Residential Historic District was listed in 1987. Older staircases there can turn, narrow or land on a small platform, which is where a curved stair lift built to the exact stair comes in. We measure before we recommend anything.

Water, storms and planning ahead

Vermilion Parish covers about 1,542 square miles, and roughly 369 square miles of that is water. Much of the southern part of the parish has been lost to erosion, especially after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005.

For a stair lift, that means thinking about where the equipment sits relative to the ground and how it will handle wet conditions. An outdoor lift on raised entry steps should be chosen with storm exposure in mind, and it helps to talk through this before installation rather than after.

Who in the parish is planning for this

That puts a fair number of households in the position of weighing a move against making the current home work.

Paying for a stair lift in Vermilion Parish

The clearest public option is Louisiana's Community Choices Waiver, which names stair lifts as a covered home modification for people who qualify for nursing-facility level care. It has income and asset limits, and a waiting list applies when slots are full.

Other programs cover home repairs or accessibility work in general without naming stair lifts, so ask them directly. Veterans should know that the VA HISA grant excludes stair glides. Statewide, the LATAN AT Financial Loan Program is another name to ask about. Details on each program are below.

Questions from Vermilion Parish

Does Louisiana Medicaid pay for stair lifts?

The Community Choices Waiver lists stair lifts as a home modification for people who qualify. You must be 65 or older, or a physically disabled adult 21 to 64, and need nursing-facility level care. Enrollment is capped, so there may be a waiting list. Call (877) 456-1146.

Can a stair lift go on the front steps of a raised house?

Yes. Outdoor stair lifts are made for exterior entry steps, and a platform lift is an option if a wheelchair needs to come along. Given the parish's storm history, we factor weather exposure into the choice.

Will the VA pay for a stair lift?

The HISA grant does not; the VA specifically excludes stair glides. The SAH and SHA grants do not mention stair lifts either way. The Vermilion Parish veterans office in Abbeville at (337) 893-2072 can help you sort out what applies.

Is there help for someone 62 or older in a rural part of the parish?

USDA Section 504 offers grants up to $10,000 for homeowners 62 and older who cannot repay a loan, in eligible rural areas, with income and asset limits. Stair lifts are not named on its list, so ask before you count on it.

Who can I call about aging services near Vermilion Parish?

The Cajun AAA (Acadiana) office in Lafayette is at (337) 262-5990. Rebuilding Together Acadiana, which serves Vermilion Parish, is at (337) 291-9910 for home repair help.
