From Haleyville and Double Springs out to Lynn, Addison and Arley, Winston County is spread across about 613 square miles of the Cumberland Plateau. The 2020 census counted every resident as rural, and much of the county sits in or next to the William B. Bankhead National Forest. Houses here are often on sloped lots, with steps up from the yard before you ever reach the front door.
That matters when someone starts having trouble with stairs. In this county the problem is as likely to be the porch steps of a manufactured home or the half flight in a split-level as a full staircase. This page walks through which kinds of stair lifts fit the homes around here and which programs may help with the cost.
Winston County's housing is mostly single-family and detached: ranch-style homes, split-level homes and manufactured homes, many of them older and owned by the same families for a long time. The 2020 census recorded 13,015 housing units countywide, with few new subdivisions in the mix.
A ranch-style home may have no inside stairs at all, but it often has entry steps or a basement flight. A split-level usually has short runs between levels, and a straight lift can handle each run if it has no turns. If the staircase turns or has a landing, a curved lift built to that exact staircase is the usual answer.
Manufactured homes almost always have steps from the ground to the door. For those, an outdoor stair lift or a platform lift at the entry is often more useful than anything inside.
The Bankhead National Forest covers 181,230 acres across Lawrence, Winston and Franklin counties, with limestone bluffs, swift streams and the Sipsey Fork of the Black Warrior River running through the Sipsey Wilderness. Houses built into this kind of ground often have long exterior stairs, decks or a walk-out lower level.
Outdoor lifts are made to handle weather, but the stairs need a solid base and a clear path at the top and bottom. On a steep lot we look at the whole route from the car to the bed, not just one staircase.
The county also has a 24.4% housing vacancy rate, much of it seasonal and lake homes near Smith Lake. If the house in question is a lake place used part of the year, tell us so we can plan around access and how the lift will be checked when nobody is there.
About 18.2% of Winston County residents are 65 or older, and the county's median age of 45.6 is above the national median. Many of those residents live in homes they have owned for years and would rather adapt than leave.
That is worth knowing, because VA benefits play a real part in paying for accessibility work, though not every VA grant covers a stair lift.
Because the county is spread out and wooded, travel to each home takes time. Planning the measurement visit and the install visit together helps keep things moving for families in Arley, Addison or Lynn as much as for those in town.
Incomes here run lower than many places: the 2010 census reported a county median household income of $33,685. For many households, paying the full cost out of pocket is hard, so it pays to check programs first.
None of the programs below lists stair lifts by name in the sources we reviewed, and one VA grant specifically excludes them. That does not rule out help. It means a phone call is needed to ask how the program handles a stair lift for your situation.

An outdoor stair lift or a platform lift at the entry is usually the right fit. On a sloped lot we also look at the ground at the top and bottom of the steps so the lift has a solid, level place to start and stop.
Often yes. Short straight runs between levels can each take a straight lift, while a staircase with a turn or landing needs a curved lift built to fit it.
