Lamar County sits in the far northwest corner of Alabama, 605 square miles of small towns and open country running from Vernon and Sulligent out to Millport, Kennedy, Detroit and Beaverton. The Census Bureau counts the whole county as rural, and most people here live in detached houses spread well apart.
That shapes what a stair lift job looks like. In a county of ranch-style and split-level homes, the steps that give people trouble are often the ones out front, up to the porch, rather than a long staircase inside. This page walks through what fits these homes and where Lamar County families can ask about help paying for it.
The local housing is mostly single-family homes, many of them single-story or split-level frame and brick houses, plus manufactured housing. You won't find many multi-story apartments or condos here. For most families, the main barrier is getting in and out the door: entry steps, a raised porch, or a back stoop down to the carport.
For those steps, an outdoor stair lift built for weather exposure is often the right call. Where someone uses a wheelchair and can't transfer to a seat, a platform lift may make more sense than a chair. We look at both during a home visit.
A split-level home usually has short half-flights between floors. Those are typically straight runs, and a straight stair lift is the simplest and quickest kind to install. If the half-flight turns or has a landing, a curved rail is built to follow that shape.
Ranch-style homes rarely have interior stairs, but some have a step-down den or a basement stair. A basement flight is usually straight too. We measure every run, because two homes on the same road can need different rails.
At the 2020 census, 22.2% of Lamar County residents were 65 or older, and the median age was 45.3. Those older residents are spread across a large, low-density area, so the drive to an aging services office can be long.
That's a good reason to make the house itself work. A lift on the porch steps or the basement stair can mean one less reason to leave a home that has been in the family for years.
About 74% of the county's 7,071 housing units are owner-occupied, so most seniors here own their homes. Household incomes are limited, though, with a poverty rate of about 18%, and many families can't cover a lift out of pocket. That makes the Medicaid waiver, VA and Area Agency on Aging routes worth a phone call.
None of the program sources below name stair lifts specifically. Some cover home modifications in general, with ramps and wider doorways named as examples. Call and ask directly whether a stair lift qualifies in your situation.
