Powhatan County sits between the James River on the north and the Appomattox River on the south, across 262 square miles of Piedmont land. Per the 2020 Census, 98.1% of residents lived in rural areas. That means most people here live in houses spread out across the county, not in apartments with elevators.
The homes themselves range from older farmhouses and historic places to newer suburban single-family houses built as the county grew after World War II. Many of them have bedrooms upstairs. For an older homeowner, or a son or daughter helping from nearby Richmond, a stair lift can be the difference between staying put and moving out.
Detached houses with one straight flight to the bedrooms are the simplest case. A straight rail mounts to the stair treads, not the wall, and usually goes in faster than people expect.
Split-level homes are different. They often have short flights broken up by landings, so the lift may need a curved rail built to fit that exact staircase, or a separate lift for each short run.
Older farmhouses and historic homes can have narrow or steep stairs and turns. We measure every step before recommending anything, because the staircase decides what will work.
Ranch-style homes keep most living space on one floor, but the trip from the yard or driveway into the house can still involve steps. An outdoor stair lift built for weather can handle porch or entry stairs.
When a wheelchair has to come along, a platform lift may make more sense than a seat. In low-rise buildings and at raised entries, that is often the question we work through first.
Powhatan is part of the Greater Richmond Region, but it is rural and low density. The paratransit and single-story housing options found in Richmond are harder to come by in the county.
Of roughly 25,785 adult residents, about 6,257 are 65 or older. Many rely on family caregivers rather than local in-home services, so making the home itself easier to use carries a lot of weight.
Two Virginia Housing grants name chairlifts as a covered modification: the Owner-Occupied Modification Grant and the Granting Freedom Grant for veterans. Each is up to $10,000 and does not have to be repaid. Call (877) 843-2123 to ask about them.
Other programs, like the CCC Plus waiver, EHARP and USDA Section 504, fund home modifications but do not name stair lifts, so coverage has to be confirmed case by case. Veterans should know that the VA HISA grant excludes stair glides, though VA Prosthetics may furnish a stair lift when it is prescribed as medically necessary.

Usually, yes. Split-levels often have short flights with landings, so the answer may be a curved rail made for that staircase or a separate lift on each run. We measure on site before recommending one.
