Angelina County covers 865 square miles of East Texas Piney Woods, with the Neches and Angelina rivers cutting through it and the Angelina National Forest reaching into its borders. Lufkin is the county seat, but the 2020 Census found 51.9% of residents living outside incorporated cities, in and around places like Hudson, Diboll, Huntington, Burke, Zavalla and Redland.
That spread-out pattern shapes the homes we see. Much of the housing here was built up a little at a time rather than in big planned subdivisions, so many older single-family homes have exterior entry steps or split-level layouts. This page walks through which kind of stair lift fits those homes and where to start looking for help paying for one.
A single straight run of indoor stairs is the simplest case. A straight stair lift rides a rail mounted to the stair treads, not the wall, and usually goes in without changing the staircase.
Split-level homes are different. The short flights between levels often turn or have a landing, and a staircase with a turn or landing needs a curved rail built to fit those stairs. Sometimes two straight lifts on separate short flights work better, and that is worth measuring before deciding.
Outside steps are common on older detached houses in the county, where the front or back door sits up off the ground. An outdoor stair lift is built for weather, and for some homes a platform lift is the better choice, especially when a wheelchair has to come along.
Housing in Angelina County is not all detached houses. There are also townhouses, walk-up apartments and low-rise buildings, and about 52.5% of residents are homeowners, so a large share of people rent.
If you rent, talk with the property owner before planning any equipment that attaches to the stairs. In a townhouse with its own interior staircase, the questions are mostly the same as in a house: how long the run is, whether it turns, and how much room is at the top and bottom.
With so many households out past Lufkin's core, a lot of homes in the county sit on rural lots along forest and river country. That often means a raised entry, a long walk from the driveway, or a porch with several steps.
For those homes we look at the whole path from the car to the bedroom, not just the indoor stairs. Fixing the inside staircase does not help much if the front steps are still the hard part.
The answer depends on the program.
The VA Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA) Grant explicitly excludes stair glides and porch lifts, so it will not pay for a residential stair lift. The VA Specially Adapted Housing and Special Home Adaptation grants do not mention stair lifts either way. Angelina County Veterans Services, at 211 E. Shepherd, Suite 118, Lufkin, (936) 639-3833, can help a veteran sort out which benefits apply.
Many households in the county come from timber and manufacturing work, and with plants like the former Southland Paper Mill closed and Lufkin Industries gone from local operations, paying out of pocket is a real strain for some families. None of the local programs below promise to cover a stair lift, but several are good places to ask.

Not through the HISA grant, which explicitly excludes stair glides and porch lifts. The SAH and SHA grants do not mention stair lifts, so ask Angelina County Veterans Services at (936) 639-3833 whether anything else applies.
It mostly changes what we look for. Rural homes in the county often have raised entries and porch steps, so an outdoor stair lift or platform lift may matter as much as the indoor stairs.
Usually, yes. If the short flights turn or have a landing, a curved rail is made to fit them, and sometimes separate straight lifts on each flight are simpler.
The Area Agency on Aging serves adults 60 and older and their caregivers. Its listed services do not include stair lifts, but a case manager at (409) 384-7614 can point you to current accessibility referrals.
