Chesterfield County covers about 805.66 square miles of the Carolina Sandhills, from Cheraw and Pageland to Chesterfield, McBee, Jefferson, Cash, Patrick and Ruby. Many of the homes in these towns are older, often multi-level houses built before single-level ranch layouts became standard. For someone whose knees or balance are giving out, that layout can turn one flight of stairs into the hardest part of the day.
The county is also very rural. About 83.2% of residents live in rural areas, and many older people live on larger lots well away from town-center services. When getting to outside care is a long drive, making the house itself work often makes more sense, and a stair lift is one of the most direct ways to do that.
Most homes here are single-family homes and detached houses, and the right lift depends on the staircase, not the town. A straight flight with no turns or landings takes a straight stair lift, which runs on one rail along the steps and is usually the simplest install.
Older multi-level homes in Chesterfield, Cheraw, Pageland, Jefferson and McBee sometimes have stairs that turn at a landing or wind partway up. Those need a curved lift, with a rail built to follow that specific staircase. We measure the stairs in person before recommending either type.
Split-level homes have short flights between levels, often just a few steps. Depending on the layout, one short straight lift may cover the flight someone uses most, such as the steps up to the bedrooms.
Ranch-style homes and mobile homes usually keep living space on one floor, but the trouble is often outside: the steps up to the porch or front door. An outdoor stair lift built for weather, or a platform lift for someone who uses a wheelchair, can handle that entry. Platform lifts need more room, so we check the space around the door first.
Both groups matter when planning, because age and veteran status open doors to different kinds of help.
If you are an adult child helping a parent, look at which stairs they use every day. A bedroom or bathroom upstairs, or steep entry steps they climb with groceries, usually tells you where a lift would do the most good.
Household budgets are tight for many families here. The county's median household income was $32,979 in the 2010 census, with a poverty rate of 22.7%, so it is worth checking public and nonprofit help before paying the full cost yourself.

None of the programs below names stair lifts in its published materials, so ask each agency directly whether a lift qualifies before you count on it.

Not necessarily. The VA housing grants describe covered changes only in general terms, such as ramps or wider doorways, and the related HISA benefit has historically excluded stair glides. Ask a VA caseworker at (800) 827-1000 or the Chesterfield County Veterans Affairs office at (843) 623-2482 before you plan on it.
Yes, possibly. The SC Department on Aging's Supportive Services program covers minor home repair and home devices for people 60 or older with limits in at least two Activities of Daily Living. Contact the Pee Dee AAA (Vantage Point) in Hartsville at (843) 383-8632 to ask if a stair lift qualifies.
A staircase that turns at a landing usually needs a curved stair lift, since the rail has to follow the turn. Some layouts can use two straight lifts instead. We would measure the stairs in person to tell you which fits.
Yes. Outdoor stair lifts are built to handle weather, and a platform lift is an option if a wheelchair is involved. The space at the bottom and top of the steps decides which one fits.
The Veterans Affairs office is at 200 West Main St, Chesterfield, 29709, and the phone is (843) 623-2482. Staff help veterans and survivors apply for benefits.
Tell us about the stairs in your home and we will explain which lift fits, what it costs and how installation works.
