Henderson has been the county seat since its formal founding in 1841, and its historic core still holds 19th-century multi-level homes with their original staircases. Those older stairs tend to be steep and narrow, and some turn at a landing. That shapes which stair lift will fit before anything else does.
Outside town, the picture changes. As of the 2020 Census, 53.3% of Vance County residents lived in rural areas, many in single-family homes spread across 268.69 square miles along the Virginia border. This page covers what local homes mean for a stair lift and which programs in Henderson, South Henderson and the rest of the county may help pay for one.
A straight stair lift rides a rail that runs one unbroken flight. Many of the original staircases in Henderson's historic homes fit that, but some turn at a landing or have a curve. A turn usually means a curved rail built to that exact staircase.
We measure the width, the pitch and the landing at the top and bottom before recommending anything. On older stairs we also check the treads and wall framing where the rail will attach.
Split-level homes are common here, and they come with short flights of a few steps between levels. One lift may not cover every level, so we look at which floors the person actually needs to reach each day, such as a bedroom and a bathroom.
Townhouses often have a single long straight flight, which is the simplest install. Walk-up apartments and low-rise buildings raise a different question, since the stairs may be shared. With 40.5% of county residents owning their homes, many families here rent, and the building owner has to be part of the plan.
The county's terrain is relatively flat, but many rural houses still have steps up to a porch or front door. For those, an outdoor stair lift built for weather or a vertical platform lift for a wheelchair can be the better fit.
Keep in mind that more than half the county lives outside Henderson, farther from contractors and from the Kerr-Tar Area Agency on Aging office in town. Planning a home visit early gives time to sort out measurements and any program paperwork together.
Two regional programs, the NCHFA Urgent Repair Program and the Kerr-Tar COG rehabilitation loan pools, accept only site-built homes, and the rehab pool also accepts off-frame modular homes. Manufactured and mobile homes are excluded from both.
If you live in a manufactured home, ask about the Medicaid waivers or VA grants below, which do not carry that same site-built rule in the facts we have. A stair lift in a manufactured home may still be possible, but the funding path is different.
Several regional repair programs serving Vance County target households below 50% to 80% of area median income, which reflects how many local seniors cannot cover home changes out of pocket. Only some programs name stair lifts or accessibility changes outright, so read the program list below closely.

Often, yes. Straight flights take a straight rail, while staircases that turn at a landing need a curved rail made for that staircase. We measure width, pitch and landings first.
The NCHFA program says funds can pay for accessibility modifications that let you stay home after an injury or serious illness. It is for elderly or special-needs homeowners below 50% of area median income in site-built homes, run locally through Kerr-Tar COG at (252) 436-2040.
The NCHFA Urgent Repair Program and the Kerr-Tar rehabilitation loan pool both exclude manufactured homes. Ask about the Medicaid waivers or VA grants instead, or call the Vance County Senior Center at (252) 430-0257 for other referrals.
