Stair lifts for Spencer County, Indiana homes

Spencer County stretches across roughly 401 square miles of southwestern Indiana along the Ohio River, from the county seat at Rockport up through Dale, Santa Claus and Gentryville. Many houses here date to the 1800s and the early-to-mid 1900s, which often means narrow stairwells and steep interior staircases.

That history is visible at the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial, the Lincoln family's 1816-1830 homestead in the county. The homes that came after were built long before anyone thought about accessibility. This page covers how those layouts affect a stair lift, and which programs people in Grandview, St. Meinrad, Chrisney and the rest of the county can ask about for help paying.

What older Spencer County staircases mean for a stair lift

A steep, narrow staircase in an older farmhouse or village home is the most common situation we see on a county visit. The first thing we check is the width of the stair and whether the run goes straight from bottom to top.

When the staircase is a single straight run, a straight stair lift is usually the simpler and more affordable fit. If the stairs turn at a landing or wind around a corner, a curved rail built to that staircase is needed.

Steep stairs also matter for how the seat folds and where the rail sits, so that others in the house can still use the steps. That is why we measure in person rather than quoting from a photo.

Ranch homes, townhouses and walk-up apartments

Housing in the county runs from single-family and detached houses to townhouses, walk-up apartments and ranch-style homes. Each one raises a different question.

A townhouse usually has interior stairs between floors, which works much like a house. In a walk-up apartment the stairs are often shared, so the building owner needs to be part of the conversation before any rail goes in.

Ranch-style homes are mostly on one level, but a few steps at the entry can still be a barrier. In that case an outdoor stair lift or a platform lift at the door may make more sense than anything inside.

Who lives here and why distance matters

About 19.3% of the county's 10,109 residents are 65 or older, and 75.7% of households own their home. Owners can modify their stairs without waiting on a landlord, which makes a stair lift a practical way to stay put.

The county is overwhelmingly rural. 2020 census data classify 100.0% of Rockport residents as living in a rural area, and that can mean longer drives to contractors, medical providers and aging-services offices. Planning the in-home assessment early helps keep the process moving.

Veteran benefits have specific rules about stair lifts, covered in the program list below.

Paying for a stair lift in Spencer County

Cost is a real concern here. The county median household income was reported at $70,890, while Rockport's is about $48,889 with a poverty rate near 13.3%.

Indiana PathWays for Aging is the strongest lead for Medicaid members 60 and older, since its predecessor waiver listed stair lifts as a home modification. The USDA Section 504 repair program, SWIRCA & More and the Spencer County Council on Aging are worth a call even though stair lifts are not named in their materials.

Statewide, you can also ask about the CHOICE Program (Community and Home Options to Institutional Care for the Elderly and Disabled) and the INDATA Alternative Financing Program (AFP). Veterans can start with Spencer County Veterans Services at 200 Main Street, Room 2, Rockport, (812) 649-6031.

Questions from Spencer County

Does the VA pay for a stair lift?

Not through the HISA grant, which specifically excludes stair glides and porch lifts. The SAH and SHA grants do not list stair lifts either. Spencer County Veterans Services at (812) 649-6031 can help you review what else may apply.

Is there help for someone under 60?

Indiana PathWays for Aging starts at age 60, and the USDA repair grant requires age 62, though the USDA repair loan does not carry that grant age rule. The Spencer County Council on Aging serves residents 55 and older as well as people with disabilities, so it is a good first call.

Will Medicaid cover a stair lift in Indiana?

The old Aged & Disabled Waiver listed stair lifts as a home modification, and PathWays for Aging replaced it on 7/1/2024. The current PathWays page does not itemize home modifications, so confirm with a care coordinator or by calling (877) 284-9294.

Our staircase is old and steep. Can a stair lift still fit?

Often it can, but steep and narrow stairwells are exactly why we measure on site. A straight run usually takes a straight lift, while a turn or landing needs a curved rail.

We live out in the country. Does that change anything?

Spencer County is very rural, which can mean longer travel for contractors and aging-services visits. Booking the assessment early and gathering program paperwork at the same time helps avoid delays.

Who can I talk to in person in Rockport?

The Spencer County Council on Aging is at 421 Main St Ste E, and Spencer County Veterans Services is at 200 Main Street, Room 2. Both are in Rockport.
