Stair lifts in Stewart County, Georgia

Stewart County's housing goes back to its 1830s start as a cotton-plantation county. In Lumpkin, the county seat, buildings from the 1830s to 1850s still stand, including the Bedingfield Inn (1836) on the National Register of Historic Places. Lumpkin was also the first small town in Georgia to complete a successful historic preservation project.

Many older homes here sit on raised foundations with front-porch steps, built long before anyone planned for no-step living. Across Lumpkin, Richland and the farm roads in between, getting in the front door can be as hard as getting upstairs. This page covers which lift types fit these houses and where to look for help paying for one.

What older Stewart County homes mean for a lift

Antebellum and early-20th-century houses often have porch steps outside and narrow or steep stairs inside. A straight stair lift works when the staircase runs in one line with no turns or landings. If the stairs bend, have a landing partway up or wrap around a wall, you need a curved lift built to that staircase.

Raised foundations put the problem at the front door. For a few porch steps, an outdoor stair lift made for weather exposure can work. If someone uses a wheelchair, a vertical platform lift beside the porch is often the better choice.

Ranch, split-level and newer houses

The county also has ranch-style homes, split-level homes and other single-family detached houses. A ranch house may have no indoor stairs at all, but it can still have steps up to the porch or down to a carport, which calls for an outdoor lift.

Split-level homes have short flights between floors. Each short flight can take a straight lift, though a home with two half flights may need two lifts or a different plan. We measure each run before recommending anything.

Living rural on 459 square miles

Stewart County covers 459 square miles of the upper Gulf Coastal Plain, and as of the 2020 census it was classified 100.0% rural. Most people reach Columbus and other towns by U.S. Routes 27 and 280.

That spread-out setting means home-modification contractors, medical equipment suppliers and in-person aging services are usually farther away than in Georgia's metro counties. Plan ahead: ask about the service visit schedule and what happens if the lift needs a repair.

Veterans and homeowners in the county

The Georgia Department of Veterans Service Columbus Field Service Office at 2100 Comer Avenue Suite 100A, Columbus, can help with claims at (706) 649-1265.

Roughly 48.6% of residents own their homes. If you rent, get written permission from the owner before any lift is installed, and note that the VA SAH grant requires owning or planning to own the home.

Paying for a stair lift

The county's shrinking population leaves limited local funding for senior programs, so most help comes from state and federal programs. None of the programs below list stair lifts by name on their source pages, which means you need to call and ask how your case would be handled.

A good first call is the River Valley Regional Commission AAA at (706) 256-2910, 710 Front Avenue, Suite A, Columbus. Georgia also has statewide options to ask about, including the Independent Care Waiver Program (ICWP), the Home Access Program, the Credit-Able Loan Program and VA Benefits for Veterans (HISA + Prosthetics).

Questions from Stewart County

Can a stair lift go on the porch steps of an older house in Lumpkin?

Yes, an outdoor stair lift built for weather exposure can run along porch steps. If the person uses a wheelchair, a vertical platform lift next to the porch is often a better fit for a raised foundation.

Does Medicaid in Georgia pay for stair lifts?

The EDWP waiver's source page lists adult day care, personal care, home-delivered meals, alternative living services and respite care, but not stair lifts. Ask River Valley AAA at (800) 615-4379 how your care plan would treat one.

Is there help for someone under 65?

EDWP accepts people younger than 65 who have a qualifying disability. Access 2 Independence also serves Georgians with disabilities of any age and can be reached at (706) 405-2393.

Where do veterans in Stewart County start?

Call the Georgia Department of Veterans Service Columbus Field Service Office at (706) 649-1265. They can help with VA SAH, SHA and TRA grant questions.

Will a ranch-style house need a stair lift?

Often not inside, since many ranch homes are on one level. Porch or carport steps outside can still call for an outdoor lift.

Who serves Richland and the rest of the county for aging services?

The River Valley Regional Commission AAA in Columbus covers all of Stewart County. Their office number is (706) 256-2910.
