Meriwether County is rural from end to end. Census figures from 2020 count 100% of residents as rural, spread across Manchester, Greenville, Woodbury, Luthersville and Warm Springs. The Pine Mountain range crosses the southern end near Warm Springs and Manchester, and many houses there sit on sloped or hilly lots.
That terrain shapes how a stair lift job goes. A home on a grade often has two problems: the steps up to the front door and the stairs inside. This page walks through both, then covers the programs a Meriwether County family can call about help with the cost.
In the southern part of the county, homes near Warm Springs and Manchester are often built into a slope. That means exterior steps and grade changes just to reach the entry, before anyone gets to an interior staircase.
For those entries, an outdoor stair lift built for weather exposure is one option. Where a wheelchair has to come along, a platform lift that carries the chair is usually the better fit. We look at the grade, the number of steps and where a landing can go before suggesting either one.
Housing here is mostly single-family homes and detached houses, with some townhouses and low-rise buildings. The county had 9,456 housing units at the 2020 census, and it is not a place of dense multi-story construction.
A single straight run of stairs takes a straight stair lift, which is the simplest install. Stairs that turn at a landing or wrap around need a curved lift with a rail made to fit that staircase. Townhouses and split-level layouts sometimes have short flights on more than one level, so we measure each one.
Most homes are lived in by their owners, with 72.5% owner-occupied at the 2020 census, so many families are adapting a house they plan to stay in.
Warm Springs also has a long tie to mobility care. Franklin D. Roosevelt came for treatment in the town's mineral springs, and the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation grew into a full rehabilitation hospital that still serves the region.
None of the programs listed below name stair lifts in their published materials. Several do list home modifications, so the right move is to call and ask whether a lift could be covered under that category.
For adults 60 and older, start with the Three Rivers Area Agency on Aging. Its in-home services include home modification and repair and assistive technology, though funding is typically limited and prioritized by need. For someone ages 21-64 with a severe physical disability, the Independent Care Waiver Program is the strongest Medicaid lead.
Veterans with qualifying service-connected disabilities can look at the VA Specially Adapted Housing, Special Home Adaptation and Temporary Residence Adaptation grants. Statewide, Georgia also has the Home Access Program and the Credit-Able Loan Program.

The Independent Care Waiver Program serves Georgia Medicaid recipients ages 21-64 with a severe physical disability or traumatic brain injury. It lists home modifications as a covered service. Call (800) 982-0411 to ask whether a stair lift fits.
Often, yes. An outdoor stair lift can run along exterior steps, and a platform lift works where a wheelchair needs to come along. The grade and step count decide which one fits.
The Three Rivers Regional Commission AAA in Griffin handles the county. Reach it at (706) 845-4560, or use the intake line at (866) 552-4464.
The VA does not name stair lifts among covered modifications for the SAH, SHA or TRA grants. A veteran with a qualifying service-connected disability can ask the LaGrange Veterans Field Service Office at (706) 756-4619.
Not always. The SHA grant allows a home owned by the veteran or a family member, and the TRA grant covers a family member's home where an SAH- or SHA-eligible veteran is temporarily living.
Tell us about the stairs in your home and we will explain which lift fits, what it costs and how installation works.
