Most of the homes around Leesburg and Smithville went up in the last few decades. Lee County grew from 6,204 people in 1960 to 33,163 in 2020, with the biggest jumps after 1980 and through the 1990s. That means most stairs we see here are in modern subdivision houses, not old farmhouses with odd angles and crumbling plaster.
The county sits just north of Albany and is 62.4% rural by Census count. Plenty of older owners live on larger lots outside town, a fair drive from Albany-based services. This page covers what local homes mean for a stair lift and where Lee County families can look for help paying for one.
The housing here is mostly detached houses and single-family homes, with many ranch-style and split-level designs and some low-rise buildings. Newer construction usually means standard stair widths and solid walls, which makes a straight stair lift a simple job in a lot of two-story houses.
Split-level homes are different. They often have short flights between levels, sometimes with a turn, so one rail may not reach every floor. In those houses we look at whether one curved rail or separate straight lifts fit the way the family actually moves through the home.
A ranch-style home may have no indoor staircase at all. The trouble spot is often the few steps up to the porch, the carport or the back door. An outdoor stair lift or a vertical platform lift can handle those entry steps.
On rural lots outside Leesburg and Smithville, the path from the driveway to the door matters as much as the stairs. We check the ground, the steps and where power can reach before recommending an outdoor unit.
The 2020 census found 71.5% of occupied homes in Lee County are owner-occupied. Owners can approve a permanent rail on their own, without waiting on a landlord.
There are also no historic districts in the county, and only three individually listed National Register properties. For nearly every home here, local preservation rules will not get in the way of a rail installation.
In 2020, 14.0% of Lee County residents were 65 or older, and the county's median age was 38.5. Many families are planning ahead for a parent who wants to stay in the house they bought years ago.
That makes the VA grants listed below worth checking before paying out of pocket.

Very unlikely. Lee County has no historic districts and only three individually listed National Register properties.
Sometimes, but not always. Split-level homes often have short flights between levels, so we measure each run and decide between one curved rail or more than one straight lift.
Veterans in VA health care can apply for the HISA grant through their VA health care facility. Those with qualifying service-connected disabilities may qualify for the SAH grant, up to $126,526, or the SHA grant, up to $25,350. The Albany Veterans Field Service Office at (229) 430-3567 can help.

Yes. An outdoor stair lift or a vertical platform lift can handle entry steps, and we check the ground and power access on site before recommending one.
Tell us about the stairs in your home and we will explain which lift fits, what it costs and how installation works.
