Sumter County stretches about 580 square miles from the Withlacoochee River on the west to Lake County on the east, and its homes are as varied as its land. The Villages fills most of the north with single-story Patio Villas, Courtyard Villas and Cottage/Ranch homes. Farther south, older rural farmhouses in Bushnell and Sumterville sit among pasture and pine flatwoods.
That split shapes the stair lift question here. In one part of the county, the issue is often a few steps at an entry or a garage. In another, it can be a full staircase in an older farmhouse or a split-level home. We work across all seven towns, including Wildwood, Lake Panasoffkee, Webster, Center Hill and Coleman.
Sumter County has the oldest median age of any U.S. county, 68.1 years by the 2022 estimate. About 71.9 percent of residents are 65 or older, and 88.6 percent own their homes.
Owning the home matters for a stair lift. You can make the change without asking a landlord, and the lift can stay in place as long as you need it. For adult children helping a parent from out of state, that usually makes the decision simpler.
Most homes in The Villages are single-story, age-restricted site-built homes, typically with two bedrooms and two baths. Designer and Premier homes follow the same one-level idea. Inside, there may be no staircase at all.
Even so, steps can show up at a front entry, a lanai or the garage door into the house. For those spots, an outdoor stair lift or a vertical platform lift is often the better fit than an indoor rail. We look at where the steps are and how they are used before suggesting either one.
Outside The Villages, agriculture is still the base of the economy, with 1,117 farms recorded in the 2022 USDA Census of Agriculture. Many families in Bushnell, Webster and Center Hill live in older farmhouses, ranch-style homes or split-level homes.
A single straight staircase takes a straight stair lift, which is usually the quickest install. Split-level homes and stairs with a landing or turn need a curved rail built to the exact shape of the stairs. Townhouses and low-rise buildings often have narrow, steep stairs, so we measure width and clearance carefully before recommending a model.
There is no single program here that clearly pays for stair lifts, so it helps to know what each one says. Florida's Medicaid long-term care program may allow some home adaptations case by case, but stair lifts are not confirmed in its benefit text. The local Area Agency on Aging can point you to elder services, though it does not list stair lift coverage.
For veterans, the VA HISA grant does not cover stair lifts. Sumter County Veteran Services in Wildwood can be reached at (352) 689-4400 to talk through other VA benefits, and The Villages VA Clinic is a local VA clinic in The Villages. The programs below list phone numbers so you can ask directly before buying.
A Florida Medicaid long-term care benefit for people 65 and older, or 18 and older with a qualifying disability, who meet nursing-facility level of care and Medicaid financial limits. Stair lift coverage is unknown: the benefit names items like grab bars and excludes major changes, so any approval is case by case through the plan; call (877) 711-3662.
The Area Agency on Aging for a 16-county North Central Florida area that includes Sumter, offering information, referral and non-Medicaid services for residents 60 and older and adults with disabilities. Stair lifts and home modifications are not listed in its materials, so confirm by calling (800) 262-2243.
A federal VA grant for veterans with a service-connected or qualifying non-service-connected condition who need structural changes to their home. HISA does not cover stair lifts or stair glides.

Often not for indoor stairs, since most homes there are single-story. If there are steps at an entry, lanai or garage, an outdoor stair lift or a platform lift may still help.
It is not confirmed. The SMMC LTC Home Accessibility Adaptation benefit names smaller items and excludes major changes, so stair lifts would be case by case and plan approved. Call (877) 711-3662 to ask.
The Elder Options / Aging Resources Elder Helpline serves Sumter County residents 60 and older and adults with disabilities. It does not list stair lift coverage, so call (800) 262-2243 to ask what is available.
No. HISA does not cover stair lifts. Sumter County Veteran Services at 7375 Powell Road in Wildwood, (352) 689-4400, can help you look at other VA options.
Usually, yes. A straight staircase takes a straight rail, and stairs with a turn or landing need a curved rail made to fit. We measure the stairs in person before recommending one.
