Baldwin County is the largest county by area in Alabama, stretching 2,027 square miles from the Eastern Shore towns of Fairhope, Daphne and Spanish Fort down to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, and inland to Bay Minette, Robertsdale, Loxley and Stockton. A house in Point Clear and a farmhouse off Highway 59 can call for two very different stair lift setups.
Many homes near Mobile Bay sit up on piers with exterior stairs because of flood-plain building rules. Newer subdivisions often have two stories. This page walks through what those homes mean for a stair lift and which local and state programs may help with the cost.
Low-lying coastal and bayside land is why so many houses in Fairhope, Daphne and the beach communities are raised. On these homes, the hard climb is often outside, from the yard or driveway up to the front door.
That calls for an outdoor-rated stair lift built to handle sun, rain and salt air, or a platform lift if a wheelchair has to get up too. The county has been hit by storms like Hurricane Frederic in 1979 and Hurricane Sally in 2020, so it is worth talking through where the lift parks and how it is secured when weather is coming.
A lot of the newer neighborhoods around Spanish Fort, Daphne and Foley were built as multi-story single-family homes and townhouses. A straight staircase with no landing is usually the simplest and least costly install.
Split-level homes, stairs with a landing, or stairs that turn will need a curved rail made to fit. We measure on site before quoting either type, since a few inches can change which lift works.
The older farmhouses in Central Baldwin communities along Highway 59 are often single-story, so a stair lift may only be needed for a few porch or entry steps. In those cases an outdoor lift or a short platform lift can make more sense than a full indoor unit.
About 37.6% of residents live in rural areas spread across this large county. If your parent lives out near Silverhill, Summerdale or Stapleton, ask about service visits and repair response before you buy, not after.
About 22.9% of Baldwin County residents are 65 or older, and 73.3% own their homes. Homeowners who plan to stay put are the people most likely to add a stair lift rather than move.
If that includes your parent, check the VA grants below early, since some come with specific rules about what they will and will not pay for.
County median household income is $82,501, so many families here pay for a stair lift themselves. For lower-income and rural households, there are Medicaid waiver, USDA, VA and nonprofit options.
Most of these programs do not name stair lifts in their published rules, and one VA grant excludes them outright. Call the program first, ask directly whether a stair lift qualifies, and get the answer before installation. The South Alabama Regional Planning Commission/AAA at (251) 433-6541 is a good first call to sort out which programs fit.
